PLASMA Workshop, 6-7 November 2000

A workshop to disseminate information on the Plant Safety Monitoring and Assessment (PLASMA) system was held on 6-7 November. The basic function of the PLASMA operator support system is to perform critical safety functions (CSF) monitoring and to present Westinghouse-type, symptom-based emergency operating procedures (EOPs) for VVER-440 type reactors. The PLASMA system is being developed by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (KFKI), the Hungarian Atomic Energy Research Institute (AEKI), and the Norwegian Institutt for Energiteknikk (IFE). Significant financial support for the workshop came from the Government of Japan.

By the time of the workshop the PLASMA system had been installed at the Paks nuclear power plant on three different computer configurations: the full-scope simulator, Unit 1 and Unit 2. The workshop gave a detailed overview of the PLASMA design, software development and testing/validation activities, together with an in-depth description of its functions and user interface. On the first day the system was demonstrated in the AEKI (by using a simulator as data source). Workshop participants then visited the actual plant installations at the Paks nuclear power plant. During the workshop, experiences accumulated by the Paks nuclear power plant experts in the preparation of the new, symptom-based EOPs, were presented and discussed.
