Nuclear development

The NEA is organising a joint workshop with the International Energy Agency on externalities and energy policy making. The workshop will be held on 15-16 November 2001 at IEA Headquarters, Paris (France). The overall objective of the workshop is to discuss the following issues:

  • assessing and internalising external costs of energy with an emphasis on electricity generation chains;
  • using external cost evaluation and internalisation in policy making for the power sector;
  • developing a framework for improving external cost assessment and integration in market prices of electricity - the role of intergovernmental organisations such as the IEA and the NEA.

Chaired by Dr. David Pearce (CSERGE, University College London, United Kingdom), the workshop will be opened by Robert Priddle, IEA Executive Director and Luis Echávarri, NEA Director-General. Anticipated participants include policy makers from governmental agencies and the industry, experts in the field of external cost evaluation, and other stakeholders (e.g. NGOs). Workshop participation is free of charge and open to representatives of OECD Member countries nominated by delegates of their respective countries in IEA or NEA Committees. For more information, contact Evelyne Bertel, NEA Nuclear Development Division (bertel@nea.fr).

Regular features

Radioactive waste management

The Co-operative Programme for the Exchange of Scientific and Technical Information Concerning Nuclear Installation Decommissioning Projects (CPD) met at the end of April. The Liaison Committee - which manages the CPD as a Joint Project under the auspices of the RWMC - agreed unanimously on the value of continuing the CPD, and put in place a self-financing mechanism through the participating decommissioning projects. The CPD also agreed to develop a series of position papers from the viewpoint of the decommissioning industry. These will contribute to discussions within the broader NEA decommissioning initiatives.

Nuclear science

The Working Party on International Nuclear Data Evaluation Co-operation (WPEC) met in Santa Fe, USA on 12-13 April 2001. The Working Party decided to develop an interactive version of the High Priority Request List for Nuclear Data and to make it available through the NEA website. Two reports, one on delayed neutron data and the other on fission product inelastic scattering, were approved for publication. These will be available in mid-2001. A new subgroup on fission-product cross-section data was established.

Data Bank

Nuclear data services

A joint CEA/NEA/CFDN/GEDEON Seminar on Nuclear Data will be held in Aix-en-Provence, France, on 14-18 May 2001. On 14 May a workshop on the Evaluation of Uncertainties for Reactor Needs will be held. A meeting for measurement specialists will take place in parallel with an NJOY Workshop/Users' Meeting on 15 May. Over the final three days the JEFF Working Party on Nuclear Data Evaluation, Processing and Benchmarking will hold its meetings. The usual sub-groups (decay data, fission product cross sections and intermediate energy data) will hold sessions on 16 May. The EFF/EAF Monitor Group will meet in a parallel session on 17 May with a final joint session the morning of 18 May. Further information on the schedule and registration details is available at www.oecd-nea.org/dbdata.
