3. NATURE OF PHYSICAL PROBLEM SOLVED

The Monte Carlo code MERCURE 4 computes in a three dimensional heterogeneous geometry heating and gamma dose rate, and by the point wise kernel attenuation in straight line, the fast fluxes. Tabulated accumulation factors give  the contribution of the scattered gamma rays.
The program calculates accumulation factors for mixtures; for multi- layer media Kitazume formulation is used.
GAMLEG/A produces the multigroup photonic library. The sources can be represented in different geometries. For each geometry, the program works with a homogeneous lattice with plane and quadrical boundaries.

4. METHOD OF SOLUTION

Random generation of the sources are used. The density is given by S(r,e)*I(r,e). S(r,e) is the sources' distribution function and I(r,e) is a weight function. For each mesh an initial weight function is generated. During the calculations, this function is modified and adjusted on the basis of the preceding results. Calculations stop when precision is reached. By using the Monte Carlo method instead of the discrete ordinates method computer time is reduced considerably.
