The NEA Romania-Bulgaria Workshop on Radioactive Waste Management and Stakeholder Engagement
NEA hosts workshops in Romania

The development of nuclear power to meet challenges like energy security and climate change depends in part on building public confidence that radioactive waste will be managed properly - and that new generations of experts will be ready to do so. These were the topics of two workshops offered by the NEA in Romania, when a delegation led by NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV, visited the country. The first event, the NEA Romania-Bulgaria Workshop on Radioactive Waste Management and Stakeholder Engagement, was held in Brașov, Romania, and brought together high-level experts from Romania, Bulgaria and other countries to discuss challenges in the nuclear waste management arena and areas where enhanced multinational co-operation could provide benefits. During the same week, the NEA and the Romanian Nuclear and Radioactive Waste Agency also held the first in-person International Mentoring Workshop in Romania Mentoring Romania’s and Bulgaria’s Future Female Leaders in Nuclear. First results from the QUENCH-ATF joint project

The NEA joint project QUENCH-ATF was established in October 2021 to investigate the chemical, mechanical and thermal-hydraulics behaviour of selected accident-tolerant fuel cladding materials under both, design basis and beyond design basis accident scenarios. In this context, the first test from a series of three bundle experiments was successfully completed by the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology team on 17 July 2022. It was performed with a 24 rods bundle of Chromium-coated Zircaloy cladding rods, under a typical loss-of-coolant accident scenario. While the extraction and analysis of the experimental results is ongoing, the analytical benchmark exercise will soon begin. The preparation of the second test scheduled for the first half of 2023 is already under way. Read more

The NEA: Advanced thinking on nuclear energy

NEA membership consists of 34 countries representing 80% of the world's installed nuclear electricity generating capacity. The mission of the NEA is to assist its member countries in maintaining and further developing, through international co-operation, the scientific, technological and legal bases required for a safe, environmentally sound and economical use of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. It strives to provide authoritative assessments and to forge common understandings on key issues as input to government decisions on nuclear energy policy and to broader OECD analyses in areas such as energy and the sustainable development of low-carbon economies. The information, data and analyses it provides draw on one of the best international networks of technical experts.
