International experts on molten salt reactors (MSRs) met in Vienna on 10-13 February 2025 to structure and plan an upcoming workshop that aims to define a standardised taxonomy and terminology for the MSR fuel cycle. The workshop, to be held on 3-7 November 2025 also in Vienna, is a joint event by the Nuclear Energy Agency (NEA), the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the European Commission’s Joint Research Centre (JRC).
MSRs are an innovative nuclear technology with the potential for enhanced fuel utilisation, sustainability and closed fuel cycles. However, the diversity of MSR fuel cycles demands a clear and consistent terminology to support research, development, regulation and international collaboration. Recognising this need, the NEA, IAEA and JRC are preparing the workshop on MSR Fuel Cycle Taxonomy and Related Terminology.
February’s consultancy meeting laid the groundwork for this event by:
- defining the workshop objectives – ensuring a focus on taxonomy development and key fuel cycle challenges;
- outlining the workshop structure – identifying key sessions, discussion topics and expected deliverables;
- mapping MSR fuel cycle categories;
- identifying key contributors and stakeholders, including industry leaders, regulators and researchers; and
- drafting the official information sheet to guide workshop participants and set expectations.
This initiative has been endorsed by the NEA Expert Group on Fuel Recycling and Waste Technology (EGFRW) and the IAEA Technical Working Group on Nuclear Fuel Cycle Options and Spent Fuel Management (TWG-NFCO), highlighting its importance for global nuclear fuel cycle development.
