The NEA Co-ordinated Research and Environmental Surveillance Programme (CRESP) related to sea disposal of radioactive waste was started in 1981 following a recommendation of the group of experts convened every five years by the NEA to review the continued suitability of the dumping site for radioactive waste in the North-East Atlantic. The objective of CRESP is to increase the available scientific data base related to the oceanographic and biological characteristics of the dump site and elaborate a site specific model of the transfers of radionuclides to human populations. The following countries and organisations are members of the programme: Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, France, Italy, Japan, and the Netherlands, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Sqitzerland, United Kingdom, United States and IAEA through its Monaco Laboratory. IMO is represented at the Executive Group of the programme.

Volume one of "Interim Oceanographic Description of the North East Atlantic site for the disposal of low-level radioactive waste" was published in early 1983. An attempt was made at this time to identify remaining gaps in our knowledge of conditions at the site and relate these conditions to the physical environment of the North East Atlantic as a whole.
