The United Kingdom has become the latest country to join the NEA Nuclear Education, Skills and Technology (NEST) Framework, alongside 13 other countries that are co-operating to train the next generation of nuclear experts. The United Kingdom has nominated the University of Manchester to be a signatory of the framework and represent the country on the NEST Management Board

Following the signing of the Act of Adhesion on 14 May 2025, institutions in the United Kingdom now have the opportunity to join existing NEST Projects, or launch new multinational and multidisciplinary training projects with at least two other NEST countries.

The Chair of the NEST Management Board, Stéphanie Cornet, said:

On behalf of the members of the NEST Management Board, I warmly welcome the United Kingdom to our shared pursuit of excellence in nuclear education and training. Their participation will strengthen our global collaborations and enrich the training opportunities on offer for students and young professionals.

Launched in 2019, the NEST Framework helps address significant gaps in capacity building, knowledge transfer and technical innovation through hands-on training projects and activities for promising students and young professionals from around the world. More than 215 Fellows have participated in eight projects across a range of technical fields such as nuclear science and engineering, radioactive waste management, nuclear safety, and nuclear medicine.

The NEA is engaging with additional countries that are interested in participating in the NEST Framework.
