NEA WebChat with Women In Nuclear Global: Leadership, retention and the future of nuclear workforce

NEA WebChat with WiN Global President Melina Belinco, February 2026

The NEA WebChat series returned on 9 February 2026 with a discussion between NEA Director‑General William D. Magwood, IV, and Women in Nuclear (WiN) Global President Melina Belinco. Held to mark the International Day of Women and Girls in Science, the conversation shone a spotlight on the persistent gender imbalance in the nuclear sector and the leadership actions needed to change it.

In 2023, the NEA published the first comprehensive survey of gender balance across its member countries. The findings showed that women remain significantly underrepresented in the nuclear workforce, particularly in STEM and leadership roles. This data underscored the importance of strengthening efforts to attract, retain and support women at all stages of their careers.

During the WebChat, Director‑General William D. Magwood, IV and WiN Global President Melina Belinco explored the findings of the NEA report and the broader workforce challenges facing the nuclear sector.

A central theme throughout the discussion was the critical role of leadership in driving cultural change. Speakers also exchanged views on how to rethink workplace flexibility, which is often viewed as incompatible with jobs in nuclear operations, as well as work practices and culture.

In the context where a number of countries are considering to increase their nuclear energy capacity, the discussion highlighted the need to not only attract, but also retain and advance women in nuclear science and technology to ensure the very best talent for the future of nuclear energy.
