The NEA Working Party on Information, Data and Knowledge Management (WP-IDKM) met the week of February 16 to kick off their new mandate period from 2026 to 2028 under the auspices of the Radioactive Waste Management Committee (RWMC).
Delegates from more than 14 countries examined current state of the art on information, data and knowledge management. Discussions included artificial intelligence for knowledge management in decommissioning, incorporating knowledge management guidance and good practices into management system arrangements and the role of memory organisations in preserving information over long timescales.
The ongoing extensive work of WP-IDKM’s three Expert Groups was also discussed (EGAAP, EGKM and EGSSC), which look into more effective methods of archiving and awareness preservation, knowledge management and the digital safety case.
One topic that required signficant consideration is the role of artificial intelligence, particularly related to use cases of AI for radioactive waste management and decommissioning specific purposes – including use of AI for review of safety cases, combing through vast records established over decades which include various formats. This work has the potential to support regulators and implementers to more efficiently review a large number of documents in support of licensing.
