WGDECOM 1

The Information System on Occupational Exposure’s (ISOE) Working Group on Radiological Protection Aspects of Decommissioning Activities at Nuclear Power Plants (WGDECOM) convened for its 18th annual meeting in Tours, France from 31 March to 3 April 2026 to discuss key issues in radiological protection (RP) during decommissioning, including alpha contamination management, and innovative techniques for RP and combined risks.

ISOE is a global platform for RP professionals from nuclear power licensees and regulatory authorities and the WGDECOM provides a forum for experts to develop a process to better share operational RP data and experience for nuclear power plants during different stages of decommissioning, or in preparation for decommissioning.

The meeting programme featured site visits to EDF facilities

The WGDECOM meeting included insightful visits to Électricité de France’s (EDF’s) Saint Laurent and Chinon nuclear power plants to see first-hand their complex decommissioning projects and to discuss the decommissioning strategies and scenarios for the five reactors. The WGDECOM participants also heard about the work of EDF’s subsidiaries and partners on graphite treatment and drone surveys in confined spaces.

The WGDECOM will hold a virtual meeting in October 2026, and their next annual meeting is to be confirmed in 2027.
