The Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) workshop on “Seismic Input Motions Incorporating Recent Geological Studies” was held in Tsukuba, Japan on 15-17 November 2004, and was hosted by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED).

This workshop reviewed the state of the art in defining realistic seismic input for the design and re-evaluation of nuclear facilities. Recent advances in source characterisation of fault zones using data from deep geological investigations and their possible contribution to improvement of seismic input definition were reviewed. Regulatory aspects and trends in OECD member countries and in countries deeply involved in seismic issues were addressed. Engineering and seismic safety considerations were also discussed to give participants a broad view of the entire process.
