The NEA Working Group on Fuel Safety (WGFS) is tasked with advancing understanding of fuel safety issues by assessing the technical basis for current safety criteria and their applicability to high burn-up and to new fuel designs and materials. The group aims at facilitating international convergence in this area, including the review of experimental approaches as well as the interpretation and use of experimental data relevant for safety.

As a contribution to this task, the WGFS concuted a code benchmark based on the Halden LOCA test series. Emphasis was on the codes’ ability to predict or reproduce the dynamic behaviour of the experimental system and in particular the thermal and mechanical response of fuel and cladding.

This report provides a summary of the results of this task.
