The NEA Working Group on Fuel Safety (WGFS) is tasked with advancing the current understanding of fuel safety issues by assessing the technical basis for current safety criteria and their applicability to high burn-up and to new fuel designs and materials. The group aims at facilitating international convergence in this area, including as regards experimental approaches and interpretation and the use of experimental data relevant for safety.

To contribute to this task the workshop on “Nuclear Fuel Behaviour during Reactivity Initiated Accidents” was held in Paris, France on 9-11 September 2009. The workshop was organised jointly by the NEA’s Committe for the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) and the French Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety (Institut de Radioprotection et de Sûreté Nucléaire, IRSN).

The current proceedings provide a summary of the results of the workshop, along with the text of the papers given and presentations made.
