The Second Workshop on Seismic Observation in Deep Boreholes and Its Applications (Kashiwazaki WS) was held from 7-9 November 2012 in the City of Kashiwazaki, Niigata, Japan, and co-organised by the Japan Nuclear Energy Safety Organization (JNES), the OECD/NEA/CSNI, and the IAEA International Seismic Safety Center (ISSC).

It was held to develop the recommendations made at the Tsukuba WS entitled “Seismic Input Motions Incorporating Recent Geological Studies” which was held in November 2004 in Tsukuba City, Japan.

Participants from eight countries and two international organisations presented 36 papers, which were discussed in three topical sessions: observation technology, evaluation of the observed seismic motion and multipurpose use.

The present document is Part I of the workshop proceedings.
