Prelude to NESTet-2021 Conference Online Event, 16.11.2020

Prelude to the NESTET 2021 Conference on Nuclear Education and Training, Monday, 16 November 2020.

  • NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV gave a virtual lecture to nuclear engineering students and faculty at the University of Wisconsin-Madison College of Engineering on 3 November 2020. During his lecture, he provided an overview of the key drivers that have encouraged countries around the world to pursue SMRs and what challenges lay ahead.  He also addressed the technology development, institutional, economic, and regulatory issues that will determine whether these new technologies will prove successful. 
  • NEA Director-General Magwood delivered a virtual keynote address to students and faculty at the Department of Nuclear Engineering at North Carolina State University on 5 November 2020 on the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the programme. During his keynote, Magwood reflected on the current status of and future prospects for nuclear energy, education and research.
  • Lelia Rousselet, an NEA social scientist, spoke about recent NEA work on the public communication of nuclear regulatory organisations at the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) webinar "Safety Culture and Ethics", organised on 6 November 2020 as part of the UNIDO webinar series "Ensuring Industrial Safety and Security in times of COVID-19 and beyond".

 

EXPERT ROUNDTABLE: Progress in HLW management and the sustainability of nuclear energy  Thursday, 12 November 2020  

  • The NEA participated in the Prelude to the NESTET 2021 Conference on Nuclear Education and Training, organised by the European Nuclear Society (ENS) and the European Nuclear Education Network (ENEN) on 16 November 2020. Director-General Magwood provided keynote remarks and joined the panel discussion on setting a framework for nuclear education and training.
  • The NEA participated in the 2020 ANS Virtual Winter Meeting, organised by the American Nuclear Society (ANS) on16-19 November 2020. Magwood joined the technical session on the "Economics of Low-Carbon Energy and Role of Nuclear Power" where he underlined the importance of system costs and full cost accounting within the context of a clean energy future.

  • The NEA participated in the 31st Annual Congress of the Mexican Nuclear Society on 16-17 November 2020. France Michel-Sendis, Head of Nuclear Data Services at the NEA Data Bank, gave an overview of the NEA Data Bank and presented its computer program and nuclear data services.

  • The NEA participated in the Generation IV & Small Reactors (G4SR-2) Virtual Summit, organised by the Canadian Nuclear Society on18-19 November 2020. During his keynote remarks at the summit session "Working with International Partners to Enable Early Movers in SMR Deployment", Magwood highlighted the importance of international co-operation in paving the way for successful global deployment of small and advanced reactors.
  • NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV and senior staff met with the leading officials from the Agency for Natural Resources and Energy of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry of Japan (METI) on 19 November 2020.
