Probabilistic safety assessment for singular design reactors

The use of a probabilistic safety assessment (PSA) in the evaluation of risk and the improvement of safety for nuclear power plants is based on clear international methodologies and has provided significant benefits in the past decades. However, challenges in conducting PSA for reactors of singular designs remain. The NEA will host the International Symposium on PSA for Reactors of Singular Designs in order to provide a forum for knowledge and experience exchange in this field.

Organised in co-operation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), the event will be hosted by the United Kingdom’s Office for Nuclear Regulation (ONR) in Liverpool on 7-9 June 2022. The symposium will convene nuclear safety professionals and PSA specialists to exchange on the use and application of PSA for reactors of singular designs, as well as on the main differences and challenges in performing the analysis.

The following topics will be addressed during the plenary and technical sessions:

  • Experience of conducting PSA for reactors of singular designs (including supporting analysis);
  • Differences and challenges of PSA for singular design reactors compared to classic PSA (including supporting analysis);
  • Operational experience from reactors of singular designs;
  • Lessons learnt and recommendations for development of PSAs and use of risk-informed decision-making processes for reactors of singular designs.

After the event, the NEA will publish the symposium proceedings which will include summarised results, presentations, conclusions and recommendations suggested during the discussions. Part of the report will be dedicated to the discussion of good practices and experiences.

The symposium is free of charge for all participants and is scheduled to take place as an in-person event. Registration for the event closes on 24 May 2022.
