French Minister for Energy Transition Agnès Pannier-Runacher and NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV will welcome more than 16 energy ministers and over 30 nuclear industry leaders to the conference Roadmaps to New Nuclear in Paris on 28-29 September.

Discussions over the two days of the conference will explore what steps are needed to assure that nuclear new build can help governments to achieve their net zero targets whilst ensuring energy security and fostering economic growth.

To achieve net zero by 2050, NEA analysis shows that total nuclear energy capacity will need to triple through a combination of the long-term operation of existing reactors, construction of large-scale Generation III reactors and the deployment of small modular reactors (SMRs). Many countries are moving forward to expand their nuclear energy capacity but much work remains in such areas as securing a pipeline of skilled professionals, assuring a strong industrial supply chain and ensuring suitable access to financing. In the lead-up to COP28, the outcomes of the Roadmaps to New Nuclear conference will set the stage for joint, focused action by policymakers, utilities and the private sector.
