The NEA has launched the new NEA-Ukraine Visiting Experts Programme, which will bring Ukrainian nuclear energy experts to the Agency. Two such individuals will work alongside NEA colleagues on topics related to small modular reactors.
Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Energy Efficiency and Green Finance, Lord Callanan, announced that the United Kingdom will provide funds to support these first two experts following a meeting with the Ukrainian Minister of Energy German Galushchenko and NEA Director-General William D. Magwood, IV. This meeting took place in the margins of the NEA ministerial conference Roadmaps to New Nuclear, held in Paris on 28-29 September.
The first two experts will come from the State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine (SNRIU), the independent regulator of all nuclear energy activities in Ukraine. The two Ukrainian experts will support the work of the NEA on nuclear regulation and radiological protection matters associated with the deployment of small modular reactors.
The necessary funds are drawn from the £62m UK Ukraine Resilience and Energy Security Programme which is providing development assistance to Ukraine to address current needs and support Ukraine’s future plans for the sector.
