The Committee on the Safety of Nuclear Installations (CSNI) and the Committee on Nuclear Regulatory Activities (CNRA) held their latest bi-annual meetings in December in an effort to further increase co-ordination across their activities.
The 76th and 52nd meetings of the CSNI and CNRA, respectively, were held in Paris on 10-13 December 2024, and gathered more than 80 delegates from 24 countries to discuss ongoing and future activities, as well as best practices in the safety assessment and regulation of nuclear facilities. CNRA Chair Tomoya Ichimura presented the CNRA Statement Reaffirming Good Regulatory Principles issued during Roadmaps to New Nuclear 2024 conference. Participants also thanked Jean-Christophe Niel for his commitment as CSNI Chair and for his unwavering dedication to the two committees’ activities for over 15 years.
During the four-day meeting, the CNRA and CSNI members addressed several topics of interest to both committees, enabling enhanced co-operation:
- The creation of a CNRA Information Exchange Forum on VVER, which will be supported by countries operating VVER reactors and will invite Ukrainian representatives to join the discussions;
- The update on CSNI plans for a workshop SMR Safety Assessment: From Challenges to Achievements, to be held in 2025 with participation of industry representatives;
- The update on the NEA Safety Research Roadmap, which will be finalised in 2025 and will provide key recommendations for implementing new safety research activities and frameworks;
- The first results of the survey on competency management and the follow-up activities to be carried out by a task group;
- The approval of 10 CSNI reports on a large set of technical topics and the endorsement of 2 new NEA safety research joint projects.
