Four years after jointly publishing the first Technology Roadmap: Nuclear Energy, the IEA and the NEA have launched the process of updating this roadmap with the organisation of three stakeholder engagement workshops early in 2014. Achieving the new IEA 2 degrees Celcius scenario (see Energy Technology Perspectives 2014) provides the background for this roadmap and shows that nuclear energy is still an essential component of a decarbonisation policy, with more than 900 GWe gross capacity projected by the middle of the century. The roadmap will highlight technological innovations and game changers which could support this ambitious growth in nuclear energy, as well as possible solutions and best practices to overcome challenges facing the sector.
